As we shared in our previous post, our 10 day trip to Liberia commenced with the start of the 2024 Paris Olympics and ended on Thursday - just a few days ahead of Sunday’s closing ceremony. The USA had a strong showing in the final medal count and we wanted to report back on how we “medaled” in each of our events!
CONNECTING
The Keyara’s Gift “dream team” spent a full day of problem-solving and planning together. The fortitude, creativity, hard work and love of this group drives the care and oversight of our students and their families.
We met with the “champion” ELWA Hospital team to discuss student care. | Phew! 13 bags made it through 3 flights and “stuck their landing” in Monrovia! |
CELEBRATING
135 students and parents gathered for a half day of dancing, singing, a talent show - and of course enjoying a meal together!
We celebrated Alfred’s high school graduation – a major achievement made especially remarkable as he was blinded in an accident nearly 15 years ago! His next goal – a University degree! We celebrated Alfred’s high school graduation – a major achievement made especially remarkable as he was blinded in an accident nearly 15 years ago! EMPOWERING
Our partnership with Days for Girls included training and resources for staff, girls, boys, men and women.
Empowered with knowledge and resources, we hope our students can stay in school during menstruation, make safe choices, and protect themselves from sexual exploitation - which sadly can be a coercion tool used by teachers.
BRIDGING
Our goal was to build bridges with school administrators and government agencies.
Many schools were closed for the summer and some government officials weren’t available, but we hope more will come of the meetings that did take place.
Our 126 students are eagerly anticipating the start of another academic year. Would you be willing to help? Inflation in Liberia means school fees have increased significantly and now average $600/per student. Any contribution helps - nothing is too small.
With gratitude,
Karen and Kreig
